7 Subscription Boxes for Crime Fiction Lovers

There is a subscription box for literally ANYTHING these days. Every month you can receive the latest and greatest in meat, Lego figurines, makeup and socks. But what about those of us with a penchant for the dark, mysterious and criminal?

Below are 7 different boxes you can buy a monthly subscription for; you pay monthly for the box and postage, they send you goodies through your letterbox!

You could treat yourself, or buy a subscription for friends and family for birthdays or Christmas!

The Nocturnal Readers Box

Every box you receive with this subscription is themed (they recently created a Stephen King themed box!), though at $35.00 per month it is on the pricey side.

If you have the cash though, the box promises to offer good value: you receive 6-8 items each month, two of which are wearable, and the whole thing has a guaranteed value of $60 – $80! They also ship worldwide – woop!

Hunt a Killer Box (my favourite!)

This monthly subscription lets you play Sherlock by sending a box of clues, codes, messages and ciphers to an ongoing fictional murder investigation. Everyone starts at box number one and works their way through the boxes and clues, building your case as you go. Hunt a Killer has built a massive online following where fans share their theories and discuss clues!

It costs $30 if you pay by the month, but 6 and 12-month plans can reduce the cost to $25. They also ship internationally… HAPPY FACE!

But hurry – they only accept 1,000 new members per month so register your interest ASAP!

Murder Mystery Box

Each box is a self-contained mystery, so you could order a one-off without paying for a monthly subscription. Every box contains a journal, evidence, and clues for you to work through and solve. There are currently four boxes available to pick from, each at $25.99.

Currently only shipping within the US  🙁

My Thrill Club!

This box is a fab price at just $14.99 per month. Each box contains two books and a DVD fitting the theme of horror, mystery, crime, espionage or thriller. The box is shipped in the first week of every month and they will also accommodate for birthdays and special occasions too, perfect as a gift!

Only available in Canada and the USA… sad face.

Creepy Crate

This is the offering from the fab website The Lineup which I featured on a previous Fantastic Blogs post. This box is a little different from the usual book-based boxes. Every other month, you receive a box chock-a-block full of creepy-themed goodies: anything from games, apparel, desk accessories, artwork, toiletries, and tons more.

Ships (in the US and internationally) the 15th of the month and is $29.99 per box, but 6 or 12-month plans are available for cheaper.

BookCase. Club (cheapest!)

You can choose from a range of book genres here, and the closest to crime is the thrill seeker case.

For $9.99 per month, you will receive two hand-picked books that fit your chosen genre. Ships on or around the 1st of each month. You can choose from 3, 6 and 12-month plans.

My Book Box

The way this works is you will be sent two books each month, one each from the two genres you pick from the following: women’s fiction, mystery, non-fiction, YA, children’s (age 8-12 or 4-7). Shipping is free and you are guaranteed at least one surprise gift… but it will set you back $39.95, the priciest box by some margin. Ships the 18th-22nd of every month.

Over to you

  1. I too agree that H.A.K. is to expensive and the clues are out there…After going through the entire box and trying to make headway you just left with a hole in your wallet and a state of confusion.
I don’t recommend it at all!!!

  2. I’m looking for a one time gift. I don’t want the gift to force the person to spend more money. If they like the mystery they can choose to start a subscription.

  3. I joined the Hunt a Killer and it’s just a ripoff it’s ridiculous you’ll have to keep paying $30 per month just to get to solve the mystery. All the “clues” in my 1st box are a ketchup cup from fast food restaurant crushed, a letter, an old news article ect. I’d love to find a subscription box that gives you all you need to solve the case in 1-2 boxes not 8 or more

    1. I’m sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoy the subscription box, unfortunately it’s quite expensive to ship to the UK so I haven’t been able to try it myself. I will keep a lookout for boxes that only have a few in the series!

  4. The Hunt the Killer Box sounds really interesting; I am defnitely going to consider taking up a monthly subscription. I love the idea of My Book Box too (receiving two books in different genres) but phew! quite pricey. I will definitely visit your blog again. Greetings from a Canary Islander teaching in Bulgaria.

    1. Thanks so much for stopping by my blog! Yes I would love to sign up to that one too! Wow Bulgaria I’ve never been but it’s on my list! 🙂
